Schema Therapy for Couples with Trauma
Dr. Jaana Markela-Lerenc
Trauma is relational, not merely individual. It affects both partners and can significantly challenge the dynamics of intimate relationships. Couples with trauma histories often find
themselves caught in repetitive patterns of emotional reactivity, withdrawal, and disconnection.
This workshop introduces a schema therapy–based approach to working with traumatized couples. Based on Roediger’s model of Schema Therapy for Couples, participants will explore
core principles for understanding schema-driven and trauma-related interaction cycles within relationships. At the same time, the workshop highlights important adaptations and
alterations of the modus model when working specifically with trauma.
The topics of this workshop are:
- How to build a therapist–couple relationship and develop trust in order to work effectively with traumatized couples
- Learning to identify trauma-related triggers: How to help the couple to understand their triggers and support them in managing these reactions
- Identifying and understanding the maladaptive mode cycle (e.g., Compliant Surrender, Angry Protector), which leads to disconnection
- Addressing the Vulnerable Child mode in order to create corrective emotional experiences and meeting core emotional needs
